Two players will be wearing the coveted No. 1 jersey this season โ junior cornerback CJ Henderson on defense and junior wide receiver Kadarius Toney on offense.
UF revealed that with the release of a new football roster for the 2019 season Monday.
Here are some of the numbers that have been assigned to the true freshmen who enrolled in Summer B last week โ Kaiir Elam (No. 5), running back NayโQuan Wright (No. 6), tight end Keon Zipperer (No. 9), Chester Kimbrough (No. 25), defensive tackle Jalen Humphries (No. 66), defensive end Khris Bogle (No. 97) and defensive end Lloyd Summerall III (No. 99).
In one other roster note, preferred walk-on quarterback Luke Matthews will be wearing the same number his All-SEC quarterback dad Shane Matthews wore for the Gators โ No. 9.
I dont think Luke will ever get any meaningful snaps, but it’s great to see some of our past champions kids on the team.
at 5’9″ his height is against him and his weight. BUT if he can play like Kyler Murray he could be the underdog recruit to surprise us.
He’s bigger than the late Larry Libatore, 65……who knows until he gets a chance to show us guys something? Sounds like he already showed something to CDM and crew.
Luke and Matthew, two of the four Gospels. Could be at least the same positive influence as Danny and Timmy, and if you believe in miracles, then who knows what he will accomplish. At least we know he is a die hard Gator!
I was never much for worrying about the number I wore. I felt the number didn’t make me. I made the number. I still have my Pony League all-star baseball jersey with my name on the back above the number 13. That was a good season.
If Luke Matthews has his father’s natural ability to adapt and overcome, we may be pleasantly surprised by his performance. We are thin at QB and hopefully Luke will earn the “Skywalker” moniker – GO GATORS!!!
Not a fan of more than one guy wearing a number. Call me old school, but if two guys want the same number, then it seems (to me anyway) to be time for the old Oklahoma Drill.
Don’t worry Al, I hear that next year the NCAA is going to go to a system in which players will start wearing the square root of their birthday on their jersey — which should clear up any confusion created by this old, outdated, archaic system of repeating numbers. ๐ค
And while I am at it 6, I also hate lineman wearing numbers less than 50, even if that occurs only on defense.
See, I always said you’re a hater! ๐
