Florida moved down a spot in the College Football Playoff rankings to No. 10, the same spot it received in The Associated Press college football poll Sunday.

The Gators (9-3) regular season ended with a 41-14 win over Florida State in Tallahassee on Nov. 24. They were ranked No. 11 the next day by the AP. On Tuesday, the Gators were ranked No. 9 in the CFP poll.

The Associated Press poll voters have put Oklahoma at No. 4 in the final regular-season Top 25, behind No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Clemson and No. 3 Notre Dame.

Georgia dropped from fourth to sixth, behind No. 5 Ohio State, after the Bulldogs lost the Southeastern Conference championship game to the Crimson Tide. The Sooners and Buckeyes won their league championship games.

The rankings were mostly unchanged with only a few games on championship weekend. Unbeaten UCF remained No 7, with Michigan, Washington and Florida rounding out the top 10.

The Gators are expected to play Michigan (10-2) in the Peach Bowl on Dec. 29, sources told Sun sports columnist Pat Dooley earlier this week. Former UF coach Jim McElwain is the receivers coach at Michigan. The teams will find out the bowl pairing at about 3 p.m. today.

McElwain will be the head coach at Central Michigan, according to Central Michigan will hold a news conference Monday at 11 a.m. to introduce McElwain.

McElwain signed a one-year contract at Michigan after being fired from Florida in late October 2017. After agreeing to a $7.5 million buyout with UF, McElwain agreed to ultimately be Michigan’s wide receivers coach for a one-year base salary of $300,000.

  1. I believe that UCF should have been put in the top four against Bama. If UCF beats whoever they play against in the bowl game, well they will be co National Champions in my opinion. If this is the case, then don’t give them any votes since they won’t get anything but a consolation game. If they are worthy to be ranked where they are right now, then they should be in for going 13 – 0. GO GATORS!!!

    • Ed, as secular and hostile to religion (my opinion) as most college campuses are today, I can’t see an organization like the CFP Selection Committee showing favoritism to a Catholic school based on religious affiliation. ND’s independent status does give them the advantage of not risking a loss in a conference championship game, but then Bama had that same advantage last season. I agree with you that all teams should be in a conference, because I believe the only way to have a true playoff is to have every eligible team in conferences that are considered equal in status. The winners of those conferences would earn a playoff spot. This is the way professional leagues do it, and until the NCAA follows suit, college football will continue to be without a true playoff.

    • Are you saying that ND not being in a conference (in addition to being Catholic) helps them get in the playoffs? I actually think the opposite is true (i.e. it hurts their chances for a playoff berth not being in a conference). Year in and year out, ND plays a very tough schedule. While SEC teams load up on 3-4 cupcakes each year, ND schedules 2, with one of them being Navy which I don’t think is a cupcake as Navy has won 4 times in the rivalry in the past 12 years. If ND would have lost once this year, I don’t think they get in the playoffs with no conference championship game to give them a boost at the end of the season. Ask the Big 12 about how not having a conference championship put them at a disadvantage in past years. That is why they instituted one this year. If the Big 12 didn’t have it this year, I doubt Oklahoma gets in this year because they wouldn’t have had the opportunity to avenge their only loss.

      • Joe, Sly and JIM – I am also looking at this with SEC eyes. There is no conference that plays as many tough opponents as the SEC year in and year out. There might be a year here and there for other conferences to maybe match the SEC team for team, but the SEC is better and you can hear it when the commentators on television discuss the teams. There were a lot of folks that wanted Ga. to be in spot #4. I am glad they weren’t awarded that spot as they had their shot at Bama and lost. I watched the UCF/Memphis game and even with a rookie QB UCF won that game. Think about how good our GATORS could be if we had that Freshman QB as our signal caller. I am willing to bet that UCF beats LSU. I am going to see what the odds are and make a wager. I wonder what the odds are going to be. GO GATORS!!!

    • I think playing UCF would have been a lose-lose situation. If we beat them, the big brother bully just beat up on our little AAC step-brother, while everyone cheers for UCF. Heck I might have even pulled for them to some degree. And if we win, well that was expected, as UF gets the top recruits, etc, etc. No, I think it’s time to see what we can do against a solid big six conference powerhouse in prime time. And one that embarrassed us last year. That’s my take.

  2. I like UCF but they don’t play anybody that justifies a spot in the playoff. Any of the top 10 – 15 teams could go undefeated in their conference every year. It’s just not fair to put them in there without playing the caliber of opponents that everyone else does all year. Speaking of playing opponents what the heck was I watching yesterday the ACC championship had Clemson playing a 7-5 Pitt now 7-6 for the championship what a joke. Also the Big 10 Ohio State against the 8 – 4 Northwestern team that is now 8 – 5…lol. That garbage would not fly in the SEC, they play such inferior opponents every week, total garbage. No wonder Alabama wins the championships all the time they play against so much better competition week to week it’s not even close for those other leagues. SEC>BIG 12>PAC 12>BIG 10>ACC

    • Gator65 – I wonder if CDM will use that Kirby not-so-Smart play call on 4th down to bolster recruiting for us? I know he tried to explain it away after the game, but you just don’t use that sort of play against Bama. If the punter or holder tried to pass for a 1st down, then I could see that as a better, more logical attempt. Bama is too fast and it showed. Any way it just makes it look much brighter to come and play for CDM and the University of Florida. We played close with everyone this year, so you all know we are very close to where we want to be again. GO GATORS!!!

        • Gator65 – I was referring to the Kirby Smart call on 4th down…not CDM. Then CDM using that as a selling point to stay away from Ga…LOL. I know the University of Florida doesn’t need to use a tactic such as that, but it is my humor that makes it funny to think that he might…LOL. U of F sells itself, and if you don’t want to be a GATOR – then they can go through life as a hater! GO GATORS!!!

          • Ed, that would be a comic selling point. I was a little slow on the uptake there. In all of football there is only ONE GATOR team. That is the biggest selling point of all. The are lots of dogs, lions, tigers etc.
