5 Questions with … Feleipe Franks

Florida quarterback Feleipe Franks is about to pass during last year's game vs. Florida State Seminoles at Florida Field. [Alan Youngblood/Gainesville Sun]

Florida redshirt sophomore quarterback:

Q: Growing up did you watch more FSU than UF? What will it be like kind of going home?

A: I didn’t grow up really watching anybody, but it’s always fun going back home and being able to visit my family. I don’t go back up there to go see Florida State or anything like that. That’s just where I’m from (Crawfordville). It’s always fun to get to play them because I know a lot of people that go to the school, I know a lot of the players that play there, and it’s always fun going there and competing against them.

Q: How do you prepare for Brian Burns, one of the best edge rushers in the nation?

A: He’s a great player, a long guy. That’s what makes him so good at times is he’s so long. He can make plays on the ball just jumping up and reaching his arms out, stuff like that. Our tackles just have to prepare for him, harder than they have all season. He’s one of the best at what he does. You have to prepare extra hard for a guy like that.

Q: How nice is it to have wide receiver Van Jefferson here?

A: He’s a great addition for us. He creates mismatches on the outside. Not even with how strong or how tall he is, just how quick and how he can get away from the line of scrimmage and make guys miss. He’s a super-talented guy and even a better person. He’s going to be really special for the next couple of years.

Q: Is he always in the right spot at the right time?

A: Yeah, he just creates. Coach (Billy) Gonzales gives those guys freedom just to create space. Sometimes the DB’s leverage can differentiate where you’re going to go as a receiver. Being able to create your own type of leverage and own space for a window for the quarterback to throw the ball is the most important thing. He does that a lot. That’s why you see him being open a lot. Creating his own space, he’s really good at that.

Q: What is it like ending your season with a loss to your rival like you guys did a year ago?

A: It’s not fun. It’s not the way you want to end the season, even with the season we were having last year. I don’t think their season has reflected what kind of team they are. A rivalry game is played different than a bunch of other games. I’m a big believer in that. We’ve got to go out there and prepare to play a really good football team. You don’t want to end your season with a loss. Nobody does. We’re not looking at it like that. We’re looking at just going out there and finish, finish the season off strong, like we did throughout the season. Just keep on going.

  1. But Feliepe, you have to hit Jefferson when he is wide open because he has such great WR skills. You have not done that much this year, unfortunately. Hopefully, that will change today because FSU is going to load the box and protect the edges against the inside runs and RPOs. Your ability to hit Jefferson and other WRs in stride instead of throwing the ball over their head or behind them is a major key today. Go do it for a change of pace.
