Special to The Sun

Florida kicker Evan McPherson was named SEC Freshman of the Week, the league announced Monday.

The weekly honor is the second for McPherson this season. He was also named SEC Freshman of the Week following the win at Mississippi State.

McPherson has been a consistent factor in the Gators’ special team efforts. The Fort Payne, Ala. native has made 11 of his first 12 collegiate field goal attempts, knocking in 21-, 25- and 43-yarders in Florida’s 37-27 win over Vanderbilt. He is also perfect on point after attempts on the season (25-25).

Additionally, the freshman is handling kickoff responsibilities for the Gators. On Saturday, McPherson sent four of his seven kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks. He totaled 433 yards and averaged 61.9 yards per kickoff.

The Gators are off this weekend, so coach Dan Mullen did not hold his usual Monday news conference and player availability is limited. UF heads to Jacksonville for a key matchup against Georgia on Oct. 27 at 3:30 p.m.

  1. This kid is so damn rock solid. Eddy brought us back from place kicking purgatory, but this kid takes it to an even higher level. His technique is spot on and he repeats it every single time. Kickers usually fly under the radar, but what a huge get he was for Mullen and all Fator fans. — We need the Evan, Evan, Evan cheer!

  2. The Eddy chant is a classic that makes Florida great. Same as when fans bowed to Emmitt. And tebowing. I agree they are organic…so the fans decide anyway. but it’s gotta be a great feeling for a recruit to know they will be loved, and that Gators are smart enough to know how important a kicker really is. Plus this kicker McPherson has already proved he is a better kicker than the referee is at calling kicks…a legend is beginning. I love it.

  3. I was called a “tool” on here when I responded that the Florida special teams deserved a grade of A instead of A- from Dooley after the Vandy game. Guess the SEC office is made up of even bigger “tools” since they selected the Florida special teams kicker as freshman of the week.

    • Anytime Toney wants to run the ball back on a kickoff from the goal line is OK with me. He is a threat to go all the way on any kickoff from that point on the field. Just did not happen this time. No minus there for me.

  4. Can you site me a time when Toney went all the way, with a kick-off??
He is entertaining, but the laws of physics still apply, and nowadays, you should bring a kick out unless you catch it at the 5+ yard line. Often they do NOT make the 25 yard line.

    • Never said he has taken one back all the way. But if you do not think he is more than capable of that on any kick he returns, then you have not watched him run with the ball much. He is dynamic with the ball in his hands anywhere and anytime on the field of play.

    • Gotta agree with this unfortunately. Kinda sad because kick offs used to be so much fun, but I understand the reason for the rule change and without looking it up I’m certain the stats would back you up. Even if you have a good or great return, half the time you’ve got a blocking penalty.

  5. Evan doesn’t have the cool youtube 70 yard kick videos that Eddy had, but I would argue that except on kickoffs, Evan is better. His accuracy is amazing, as is his poise for only a FR. He has been solid for UF from day one.

  6. Utterly amazing that we could have two kickers go to the NFL (I know: the Raiders ate barely an NFL team, but still…) and replace them with two guys who are at least as good. Such a relief knowing these dudes will do their jobs every time.

  7. Evan – Stay humble young man. Block out all the hype and expectations. You have a job to do. Prepare the same way as you have been each day. You are only a freshman and still have a long ways to go before making the big bucks.
