Updated: Zaire to receive NFL tryout; Ravens sign Thompson

Two more undrafted former Florida Gators are at least going to have a chance to make an NFL team.

Malik Zaire, the graduate transfer from Notre Dame, has been invited to the Jacksonville Jaguars rookie mini-camp (May 11-13), while running back Mark Thompson was invited to the Baltimore Ravens mini-camp Friday and was signed to a free agent contract, the team announced Friday. In two seasons at UF, Thompson carried the ball 126 times for 596 yards and five touchdowns. He also had 184 receiving yards and one touchdown.

If Zaire performs well in mini-camp, there’s a chance he could be signed to free-agent contract.

  1. Thompson is an athlete with very positive pro-metrics– size and speed, but he never seemed to be able to get established here. I hope he finds a place he can use his god-given abilities, because he has talent for sure. Zaire I never really got to see, but I felt sorry for him that he got suckered into the Nussmire. Hopfully, he can catch on as well!

  2. It’s always hard to understand why Thompson didn’t star at Florida. 6 ft., 2 in, 235 lbs and a 4.45 40 yard time. Led nation’s jC’s in rushing. HE comes to Florida and shows glimpse of pro talent, but often than not, it was a glimpse of “WHERE AM I SUPPOSED TO GO WITH THIS BALL?” Sadly, it might have a failure of the old coaching staff. I wish him great success in the NFL and I think he’s got the talent, it’s just hidden somewhere inside his head.

    • Nothing against the young man, but on the field he hit the holes like he was the size of Chris Rainey…and had to get up to speed before delivering the goods. I always thought McElwain had too many backs in rotation and took too long to realize who the difference makers were. Once he got going, he morphed back into his 235 lb self…but that was few and far between. Since the NFL loves all those combine-esque measurables over tape, I don’t doubt he could could make a roster…and I do hope he succeeds.
