Florida has found its latest kicker.

Evan McPherson, a 6-foot, 165-pound prospect out of Fort Payne, Alabama, flipped his verbal commitment from Mississippi State to the Gators.

Mullen confirmed McPherson’s commitment via his Twitter account.

McPherson, who took an official visit Saturday to Florida, is ranked by 247Sports as the nation’s No. 2 kicker in the 2018 class.

With McPherson’s commitment, which is non-binding until he signs a letter of intent, the Gators have 14 verbal commitments in the 2018 class.

  1. Well, unless I missed it somehow, I didn’t get whether or not this youngster is a punter, place kicker, or both. Regardless, a bit of fresh (good) news in as much as if he works out to his ranking he’ll be good overlap either way. GO GATORS….

  2. I went to 247sports and it appears he is a FG and PAT kicker. He is deadeye on the PAT’s and less so on the FG’s (7 of 13), but who knows what he was expected to kick. Apparently he has a long of 52 yds. I hope I got these stats right. I’ll take the no. 2 nationally ranked kicker any day even if he is a 3* (as a kicker, he is a 5*).

    • Good deal, appreciate the research. I keep hearing background noise about Pinero going for the draft before he graduates….hope that’s just all it is…..but if he does do that it’ll be good to know we’ve already got his replacement on board!

  3. I think kickers and punters rarely if ever receive more than 3 stars. Maybe because they’re not every down players, or because they often don’t pan out for some reason. But you could argue that Townsend and especially Pineiro were our best players last season. Hope this guy will be good for us.

  4. Think Eddie is gone, he’s said during interviews that he needs to take care of his family and there’s no better way than to land an NFL contract (money-wise at least). Can’t blame him for that, but will be mighty sad to see him go. Seems like he just got here.

  5. Now need to land a top 5 punter in the country to replace Townsend. Townsend & Pineiro were the best assets we had on our team over the past couple of years. Lord knows we needed Townsend on almost every drive to pin the other team deep after all of our 3 and outs. However, our special teams were horrible and couldn’t tackle anyone. Townsend will be missed. Great Punter.

  6. What happened to Connor Davis as a recruit? His stats are much better than this kid and is a legacy as the son of Jud Davis former Gator All American kicker. Connor selected to all state team last year and playing in state
all star game this year and was highly recruited by Florida before Mullen arrived. STRANGE 1

  7. Hopefully, this new kid will have a little less mustard than the outgoing hot dog. Pretty sad when the only excitement the crowd had during a game was chanting the place kicker’s name during field goals and the occasional extra point.

Extra points are supposed to be afterthoughts to an exciting touchdown, while field goals are a compromise on a failed drive for a touchdown. You know, like the Spurrier days. And the Meyer days.
