Gators balling in football recruiting

Despite the poor start to the season and the negative reaction by many fans, everything remains positive in recruiting, UF football coach Jim McElwain said.

“It’s been great. It’s been really positive,” he said. “A lot of guys see the opportunity they’re going to have and momentum has been really good with that.”

The Gators already have 18 commitments for the 2018 recruiting class, and all seem firm, including four-star quarterback Matt Corral, who continues to recruit for UF and plans to enroll in December.

McElwain was asked why he thinks recruiting is going so well, especially with all the negativity swirling around the program with the 3-3 start.

“No. 1, relationships,” he said. “No. 2, there are opportunities. Seeing the growth, everything from the facilities to the emphasis put on certain things I think has been really good.”

McElwain said the Gators are hoping all of the commitments will become signees during the new early signing period in December.

“It will be interesting to see,” he said. “Obviously, we’d like to sign all 25 in December. We’ll see. Certain guys are ready earlier, obviously the ones that we can get in here at mid-year. We’ve got a pretty good deal set up as far as that announcement.”

McElwain said there is a lot of negative recruiting going on by other schools.

“That’s a tactic that a lot of people use,” he said. “It’s not something we believe in. We’re honest and upfront. Let them know the way it’s going to be.”

  1. Matt Corrall may prove to be the missing piece of the puzzle on offense, and it sounds like he’s already showing leadership before even arriving on campus. Coach Mac and his staff are steadily building the talent pool while affecting positive changes to give UF needed advantages on the recruiting front and they deserve credit for this. I hope they can get more commits from quality lbs and def linemen and O linemen to get us back in contention again in the SEC. Go Gators!

  2. Good looking class at this point. Hope we’ll get William Barnes & Ed Montilus from Apopka to close out the OL recruiting. We definitely need a DT or two. Not sure how the suspended players situation gets handled. We could lose several others due to that. If so, LB will be a position of need as well. Hope we have several early entries & keep all our commits. Go Gators!

  3. Hate to say it but the Knucklehead Nine are going to jail, or a sentence of some sort. It’s not shoplifting that they did. Doubt they will ever see a college playing field again…unless Second Chance U has a spot.
And Franks (as well as a few other blue chippers), has proven to me that until they step on an SEC field in front of 90K you don’t know what they bring. HS state championships don’t mean squat. I sure hope Corral can strut his stuff on the opposite coast but only time, and a few big time college games will tell.

  4. Looks like a pretty good mix, but as Uncle Rico pointed out above, there is only 1 linebacker in this class so far. Hope the staff will be focusing on using the remaining scholys (assuming the above 18 all sign on) to add a couple more LB’s to this class. Gators seem to have more injury problems at this position so depth is a critical need.
