UF seeking donations for hurricane relief efforts

The Florida Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has initiated a donation drive to help with Hurricane Irma relief efforts.

Fans wishing to donate items can do so before UF’s soccer game on Thursday night against Ole Miss (7 p.m., James G. Pressly Stadium) and before UF’s volleyball match on Friday night against Northern Kentucky (7 p.m., Exactech Arena). Items needed include cleaning supplies, socks, baby wipes and diapers, blankets, Ziploc bags, toiletries, clothing and nonperishable food items.

The UF athletic department also has teamed up with and asks fans to donate to One America Appeal, which was launched last week and has expanded to include the Florida Disaster Fund. One hundred percent of the funds will go toward disaster relief and recovery. Donations can be made at www.oneamericaappeal.org.

Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin and other UF coaches have teamed with the city of Gainesville to host a breakfast Friday morning for first responders in the community who have worked tirelessly during Irma. During Saturday’s game against Tennessee, Florida plans to recognize Irma first responders for their efforts. In addition, Florida will wear a helmet decal to recognize the plight of families impacted by Irma throughout the state.
