Even with the suspended Antonio Callaway out of the picture for now, the Gators apparently still have plenty of viable options at the wide receiver spots.
“We have eight or nine we feel good about,” head coach Jim McElwain said. “Obviously, getting them in the right positions when you start to put together a game plan is where we’re at right now.”
McElwain singled out two receivers — junior college transfer Dre Massey, who missed last season after injuring his knee in the opener, and true sophomore Tyrie Cleveland, who started to emerge late last season.
“Dre Massey had an outstanding scrimmage (last Friday),” McElwain said. “It was kind of like, ‘Oh, there it was.’ He had a couple (plays) break out, kind of really cool plays where you go, ‘Ok, this is where we thought he was a year ago.’ That was good.
“Tyrie Cleveland is playing with a lot of confidence. Our speed (at wide receiver), our guys are running fast. I like that.”
