Florida freshman linebacker Nick Smith had surgery Monday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee, a procedure that will keep him out for at least six weeks, a source close to the program confirmed to The Sun.
Smith, a standout at Orlando’s Dr. Phillips High who signed with Florida in February, is the second Gator to suffer a significant injury in the past week. The program announced Wednesday that senior safety Marcell Harris, who also played high school football at Dr. Phillips, would miss the season with a torn Achilles tendon. Smith also suffered his injury at a UF workout.
The loss of Smith is a blow to Florida’s depth at linebacker, a position that returns just four players who have started a game for the Gators.
