Four-star defensive back C.J. Smith has backed off his verbal commitment to the Gators and reopened his recruitment, the West Palm Beach (Fla.) native announced on his Twitter account.
“After talking it over with my family and coaches,” Smith wrote, “I feel like it would be in my best interest to de-commit from the University of Florida.
“Also, I would like to thank coach Jim McElwain and his entire coaching staff for believing in me and my athletic abilities.”
After committing to the Gators on March 28, Smith took an unofficial visit to Florida’s campus in April for the Orange and Blue Debut game.
Smith’s decommitment leaves the Gators with seven verbal commitments in the 2018 class.
