An 11-2 record and another New Year’s Six bowl win helped Florida produce a No. 6 ranking in the final Associated Press college football poll released Tuesday morning.
LSU finished No. 1 in the AP Top 25 for the third time in school history, with Clemson No. 2 and Ohio State No. 3.
The Tigers (15-0) beat Clemson 42-25 in the national championship game Monday night and then received all 62 first-place votes from the media panel in the season’s final Top 25.
LSU was No. 1 for the final eight weeks of the season and set a record by beating seven teams ranked in the top 10 at the time of the game. Miami in 1987 and Alabama in 2015 each beat five teams ranked in the top 10 at the time of their games.
Florida finished No. 7 with a 10-3 mark and a New Year’s Six bowl win over Michigan following coach Dan Mullen’s first season in 2018. The Gators took another step toward the top in Mullen’s Year 2.
“This is why those guys came to Florida, to play in big games, play on the biggest stage, to be one of the best programs in the country, and to do that in back-to-back years — if you want to be able to be a championship program, you’ve got to win consistently,” Mullen said following the Gators’ 36-28 triumph over Virginia in the Orange Bowl last month. “You don’t see teams — you look at the playoff teams, the guys that made the playoffs this year – they’re not teams that just came out of nowhere and hadn’t been winning and finally won.
“You’re looking at teams — I think all of them were in New Year’s Six bowl games last year. You’ve got to be a consistent winner to go be a championship program, and I think the guys here in our program are helping us build that.”
The Gators were ranked No. 7 in the final Amway Coaches Poll.
