Florida redshirt junior quarterback Feleipe Franks:

Q: How much leeway do you have in the offense to read the defense pre-snap and make a read, audible, etc?

A: Coach (Dan) Mullen does a good job giving me the freedom that if I see something I can either look to the sideline or if I know it I can just run it. I’ll change it and run it. It starts with preparation. When we go in and we’re in the film room, he says, ‘You see this look, you want to do this. When you see this look, you want to do that.’ It just starts with preparation and then going back to me and him and everybody else being on the same page.

Q: Is it more now than maybe it was last year?

A: I would say I’m more comfortable with making it now than last year. I think he’s pretty comfortable with always making a check. But I would say I am more comfortable now than last year.

Q: Mullen has talked about trying to get you not to worry about what’s said in the media, social media or fans. When did that start to click for you?

A: Me just going out there and not playing to please everybody else was important for me, kind of going through the transition to become a better player and going over the list of things that I need to improve on. One of the main ones is just always go out there with an open mind. Always be ready to learn whether it be in practice and then a game. You never play to please anybody else. So I go out there because I’m a competitor and I like to win, hate to lose and that’s kind of what it boils down to, not much more to it than that.

Q: Was there a specific conversation with him or someone else where that crystalized?

A: No. I couldn’t say it’s just like one conversation and then it just smooth sailing the rest of the way. It’s over time, from since he got here to now it’s just been a consistent thing. You kind of want to just keep on consistently nailing it into my brain and eventually it’s going to become second nature and not worry about things like that.

Q: What is your knowledge of the history of the UF-UM rivalry?

A: If you’re asking me the knowledge of the stats and all that stuff, I have no clue. Growing up and in high school all I heard about — I was right there in Tallahassee — all I heard about was Florida State-Florida, Miami-Florida. It was always Florida State-Florida or Miami-Florida. That’s kind of what it boiled down to and what I grew up hearing. I knew it was an in-state rival game, but they have a really good team just like we have a really good team. I think it will be a good matchup.

  1. Frankly speaking (I have always wanted to say this), Franks is the man for the job – he is ready – tried and true – he is a proven leader who will lead the Gators to VICTORY over Miami – GO GATORS!!!
