Now that the potentially elite back, Lamical Perine, is gone, getting ready for the NFL season, is there any reason to think the Gators’ running game will be any better in 2020?
Using the 247Sports Composite, Florida has accumulated top-15 recruiting classes in each of the last three cycles (2018-20), meaning there is plenty of talent waiting in the wings to fill these voids.
Around July 24, the meetings and walk-throughs can begin. Then 29 days before a team's first game — Aug. 7 if the opener is Sept. 5 — the usual preseason practice period starts.
The goal now is to keep UF athletes protected.
Monday also marked phase three of the players’ return to campus. The latest group joining the ranks features multiple true freshmen, including linebacker Derek Wingo, defensive tackle Gervon Dexter, defensive back Avery Helm, defensive tackle Jalen Lee, wide receiver Jaquavian Fraziars, defensive end Princely Umanmielen, tight end Jonathan Odom and offensive lineman Gerald Mincey.
Caldwell was a second-team, All-SEC selection in 2001 when he posted the eighth best total in UF single season history with 1,059 yards. He finished his career with 2,088 receiving yards and 18 touchdown catches, leaving school a year early to enter the NFL draft.
This ranking is still good for the second-best mark in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), however, trailing only the No. 2 Tennessee Volunteers.

If Florida is ultra-successful, it will be hard to hang on to him for another season.
So, there’s no doubt that transfers are going to have an impact with the Gators in 2020. UF isn’t the only SEC school that likely will benefit from the portal this season.

With the question regarding his eligibility now answered, Lingard will look to compete for reps this season in a UF running back unit led by Dameon Pierce and Malik Davis, with Nay’quan Wright and Iverson Clement vying for a role, too.
