White: Seth Davis prediction “something we can use again”

Florida coach Mike White doesn’t mind that basketball analyst Seth Davis picked the sixth-seed Gators to lose to either 11 seed UCLA or St. Bonaventure on Sunday’s TBS Selection Show.

Davis picked against the Gators to be upset by 13 seed East Tennessee State last year and to lose two more times before finally getting his prediction right when Florida lost in the Elite Eight to South Carolina.

“I was appreciative of Seth,” White said. “He helped us last year. So we’ll use it again. Who knows how much of a factor it will be with these guys? These guys are hard to tick off. My guys, I’m not sure I’ve found the button that produces a bunch of edge, but we’ll throw it at the wall, for sure.”

Last year, White used the clip of the Davis prediction before Florida’s first NCAA Tournament game against ETSU. Behind 24 points from former Gator forward Devin Robinson, UF raced to an 80-65 win.

But White doesn’t know if playing a clip of the Davis blurb this time around would have the same impact on this season’s team. At 20-12, Florida has been consistently inconsistent throughout the 2017-18 season, going 6-2 against ranked teams while losing 10 games in which it was favored.

“These guys aren’t really animated,” White said. “Really, really nice guys, too nice of a group, really, I’d like to see this group one day tear up a locker room after we lose, but that’s not happening.”

  1. Coach White is right. Its time to lose the nice guy personas and show a little intensity. Id like to see Chiozza step up and lead the team and call out guys when they need it. He has got to be the leader of this team. It used to be Egbunu last year but he is not there. Time to get a little nasty and play like its your last game because every game might just be. I really home Kevaughn Allen plays aggressive. That opens things up for Hudson and Egor. Hope Hayes acts like the rim protector he can be too.

  2. If Allen and Hudson play and shoot well, the Gators can make the Sweet 16. But both have to play well and shoot well every single game and not once every two or three games. That every other game or so misfiring has to end if this team is to go far in the tourney. Simple as that. Go Gators.

  3. I heard Dumbo Davis’ comment during the selection show (which was by the way the worst selection show ever, particularly when Greg Gumbel’s mouth was moving and we heard Ernie Johnson’s voice). Davis is a joke.

  4. I can’t disagree with any of the above, but I also couldn’t help but notice that all of the “Recent Topics” just to the right on the page are written in some sort of Asian script. Do we have some newly converted basketball fans from the far east?

  5. I think Coach has done a great job with pretty much an all guard line up. With that in mind, considering we have nothing to lose and this is one or done, I would love to see us go up and down the court launching it every chance we get and playing up tempo. Play a run and gun type of tempo. We have lost games we should have won by playing the other way, and I think we have played our best when we just decided to let it go.

  6. Who shows up tomorrow night, the Lady Gators or the men’s team? Florida should be pumped — they got a better draw than Kentucky to make the Sweet 16. But, temper your excitement because White can screw things up quickly.
