Beyond The Arc: 3 takeaways from UF’s win over Kentucky

Three observations following Florida’s 80-67 win over Kentucky on Saturday at the O’Connell Center:

— Florida was excellent moving and sharing the ball when facing Kentucky’s man defense. But the Gators need to take that same approach in breaking down zone defenses. Often Florida gets too stagnant against the zone, dribbling around the perimeter and settling for 3-pointers rather than attacking it.

— Florida sophomore center Gorjok Gak stepped up with a decent performance with 6 points and 4 rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench. Gak looked confident taking the ball to the basket for a three-point play in the first half and even made a rare free throw. The Gators are going to need more production from Gak, especially if redshirt freshman forward Dontay Bassett remains in concussion protocol through the SEC Tournament.

— It was good to see Florida coach Mike White work the officials a little more Saturday. White is normally reserved on the bench but was talking to lead ref Doug Shows during TV timeouts and was animated during a botched in-bounds call in the second half. Sometimes, coaches need to fight for calls and White displayed more of that Saturday.

  1. Great win; Coach White has received criticism this season (some deserved, much not) and to say they’ve been up and down/hot and cold is the understatement of they year. Still, with essentially 10 healthy players (and at times 8 or 9) this has been a fun, entertaining squad that that has their heart into each game. Not sure how far they’ll go in the SEC or NCAA tournaments but I’m optimistic for the future and, even though I was frustrated from time-to-time this season like everyone else, I’ve enjoyed the journey and salute this year’s squad.

  2. Thrilled with the win yesterday and the regular season sweep of Kentucky, but 6 of 7 losses in the SEC to the bottom half of the league is inexplicable. Can you imagine the year the Gators could have had if they handled those games better and won at least 50% of them? How about first place in the conference and a probable Top 10 rating.

Keep it up Men and work to realize the potential of this squad in the SEC and the NCAA Tourneys!

  3. I only saw the second half and we missed some fairly easy opportunities that allowed KY to cut the lead. I was watching the big ten games later and saw much better play, perhaps due to other factors.

    • That’s pretty terrible analysis based on only watching the 2nd half and then comparing it to big ten games later. The thing about this game that was the best for me was that I actually think Kentucky played pretty well. That’s why they cut into the lead, but we built the huge lead by playing stellar defense and offense in the 1st half. The offense stumbled a little bit in the 2nd half, and UK continued to play pretty well, but the lucky bounce 3-pointer by Hudson was the most important shot of the game. UK had just cut it to 9 and things were getting tense. Once we took a double digit lead in the 2nd half, UK never had another possession where they were within 10 points. And since they have a coach with no clue what he’s doing, they weren’t able to find their footing. It was a great win and if UF plays like that for 40 minutes, there’s only 3-4 teams in the nation capable of beating us
