Beyond the arc: 3 takeaways following UF’s 66-60 win over Cincinnati

Three observations following UF’s 66-60 win over Cincinnati at the Never Forget Tribute Classic in Newark, N.J.:

— Florida can offset its size disadvantage playing four guards if it can force turnovers like it did against Cincinnati. The Gators scrapped throughout the game, getting hands on balls to force 21 turnovers and convert them into 27 points. “If you told me before the game we’d get 21, I wouldn’t know if that was possible,” Florida coach Mike White said. “We were scrappy out there.”

— Florida was more disciplined in its shot selection against a Cincinnati defense that overplayed the perimeter. The Gators went 6 of 15 from 3-point range and didn’t settle for contested ones to break a two-game slump from beyond the arc. Florida was at its best getting open 3-point looks in transition by pushing the basketball. Florida outscored Cincinnati 11-2 in fast break points.

— Florida junior guard KeVaughn Allen continues to struggle. Allen went just 1 of 5 from the field with 2 points, not scoring until midway through the second half, and missed a free throw in an attempt to convert a three-point attempt. The thought going into the season was the addition of transfer perimeter threats Egor Koulechov and Jalen Hudson, Allen would get more open looks on the perimeter. But Allen has had a hard time meshing with the two newcomers. The Gators need to find a way to get their preseason All-SEC standout going.

  1. Scrappy win, and I agree with Sly, ”good resume win”, Gators! Now Hayes, Gak,, Stone, and Ballard have to learn how to contribute more than just 11 points (their combined total) in a game. As U.F.’s ”Big 4” (scoring players): Allen, Cheese, Hudson, and Koulechev can’t be expected to carry U.F. throughout the rest of the long season. Some other Gators, like the bigs, have to step it up, too! Go Gators!

  2. The team needs to move the ball instead of isolation dribbling for a shot. Allen is hesitant in decision making. Hayes is not strong with the ball in his hand. He loses it constantly being stripped. Big guys need to score and be more aggressive. Play with extreme passion……Allen .

  3. This was an early season must win and I loved the way we gutted this one out in a defensive battle. The fact we won this game in a style that we would prefer not to play says a lot about this team. Great win. GO GATORS!
