NEW YORK — Former Florida standouts Peter Alonso and Tim Tebow will be among 13 additional players who will be invited to spring training, the New York Mets announced Thursday.
Alonso, the 24-year-old first-base prospect, will have a chance to make the big club if he impresses this spring, general manager Brodie Van Wagenen said in December. Alonso hit 36 home runs combined in Double-A and Triple-A last season.Tebow, the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback who is expected to begin the season at Triple-A Syracuse, will continue his quest to make the major leagues in his third professional baseball season. Tebow also was in the big-league camp last year. He batted .273 with six home runs at Double-A Binghamton before breaking a bone in his right hand in July.

Pitchers and catchers report on Feb. 12 with position players reporting on Feb. 16. The first full squad workout is scheduled for Feb. 18 in Port St. Lucie.

    • I’m afraid that’s undeniable, as much as we love Tim Tebow, but if mostly star power got him the opportunity but his determination and performance gets him on the team before it’s too late……man alive, will we be proud of him.
