When the St. Louis Cardinals called up outfielder Harrison Bader from Triple-A Memphis to fill a roster spot for an injured player Tuesday, the list of former UF players in Major League Baseball grew to eight.

Also on MLB rosters:

Red Sox pitcher Austin Maddox (10-day DL)
Red Sox pitcher Brian Johnson
Red Sox pitcher Bobby Poyner
Orioles pitcher Darren O’Day
Mariners catcher Mike Zunino (10-day DL)
Braves outfielder Preston Tucker

Angels infielder Nolan Fontana

Tucker, 27, hit a three-run home run Tuesday to help Atlanta hand Washington its first loss with a 13-6 win over the Nationals.

The Braves acquired Tucker in a trade with the Houston Astros for cash considerations in December. The outfielder was regarded as a good prospect in the Astros’ farm system, but he struggled with his health. He underwent shoulder surgery in 2016.

  1. Thank you for telling us this info. Now I know which teams to root for. The Pirates are my team from when I was a kid – Clemente, Smoky Burgess, Vern Law, Harvey Haddix, Dick Stuart, Dick Groat, Don Hoak, Rocky Nelson, Bill Virden – those guys. But I like to pull for former Gators also.

  2. Jackah, lifelong Pirate fan myself even though I never lived there (my late dad grew up there). I remember all of those names along with Bob Skinner, Bill Mazeroski, Don Clendenen, Elroy Face, and a bit later, Gene Alley, Rich Hebner, Willie Stargell, Bob Robertson, Al Oliver, Steve Blass, Matty Alou and many others. I also like to keep track of Gators (UF class of ’75) who make it to the show. Remember Josh Fogg? Pirate pitcher for a couple years back in the early 200’s. Thanks for the memory trail!

  3. Good article, and I would appreciate an article sometime about Gators in the minors, to see how they are doing. Especially recents UF players like Logan Shore and Peter Alonzo. Thanks.
Also, what happened to Anthony Desclefani(sp?)?

  4. Steve: Yes, at some point soon the plan calls to get into that list of Gators in the minors.

Anthony DeSclafani is still battling injury woes. He’s on Cincinnati’s 40-man roster, but is on the 60-day disabled list.

  5. Steve, Baseball America website has a great database for keeping track of players. You can enter in the player name and they will give you current and old stats, along with what level and organization they are in. Pretty Disco missed all of last year and is currently on the DL to start the year.

  6. It has been assumed that Preston Tucker will go to the bench when Ronald Acuna is called up to the Braves ML team after April 13 and only be a pinch hitter for the team. But, if he continues to stroke the ball as he has so far, the Braves have a big decision to make concerning who plays in their primary starting outfield. Markakis has to be feeling some heat from Tucker right now. Tucker is displaying power, something Markakis has little of. But Markakis is a far better defensive outfielder than Tucker. Anyway, great to see Preston has recovered from his injuries while with Houston and is back on track with his career in MLB. He could turn out to be a major surprise for the Braves this year.
