Roundup: Gators capture Allstate Sugar Bowl golf title

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Florida women’s golf team captured the Allstate Sugar Bowl team title by a commanding 16 strokes at the English Turn Golf at Country Club on Tuesday. Clara Manzalini led the way for the Gators as she claimed a share of the individual title at 7-under par.
Florida’s win in New Orleans was a complete team effort as all five players in the lineup finished within the top-15 individually. Florida shot a final-round 11 under to finish with a tournament total of 23-under 853.
"I’m really excited by what I saw from the team this week," UF coach Emily Glaser said. "We played really solid golf from one to five which is great to see."
Manzalini played steady during the first two rounds of the tournament, but really hit her stride through the final 18 holes. The sophomore fired off a blemish-free 6-under 67 in the last round to secure the first individual collegiate win of her career.
Addie Baggarly also had a solid tournament in the Big Easy, tying for third. Baggarly shot under par all three rounds, turning in a 72-71-71 to finish at 5-under 214 collectively. The junior’s steady outing marks her lowest tournament score of the season.
Freshman Marina Escobar notched the first top-10 finish of her collegiate career, tying for eighth after shooting 1 under in the final round. This is also the first event as a Gator that Escobar has finished under par as she totaled 3-under 215 through all 54 holes.
Marta Perez signed a 2-under 71 in the final round to put her at 3 under overall and in a tie for 10th individually. Perez’s tie for 10th marks the 13th top-10 finish of her career and second of the season.
Women’s basketball: After averaging 20.5 points per game and leading Florida to wins over Ole Miss and Missouri, guard Lavender Briggs was named SEC’s Freshman of the Week on Tuesday.
The league’s top scoring freshman showed why, leading UF to a 2-0 week with averages of 20.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists. Briggs began the week by tying her career high with 23 points vs. Ole Miss and tying an SEC best with 11 made free throws. Briggs’ play was crucial down the stretch as she hit the game-winning free throws and notched the game-sealing steal on the ensuing possession to lift Florida to a 74-72 win.
The Utah native followed that up with a team-best 18 points, helping fuel Florida to its first-ever win at Missouri on Sunday. Scoring in double figures for the 20th and 21st times this season, Briggs led the team in scoring and minutes played for the week.
Gymnastics: It is four straight SEC Gymnast of the Week honors for Florida sophomore Trinity Thomas after her performance last Friday in No. 2 Florida’s win at then No. 17 Auburn.
This is her fifth SEC Gymnast of the Week recognition of 2020 and eighth of her Gator career.
Thomas turned in the nation’s leading total for the weekend (39.775), claiming her fifth all-around win of the season in Florida’s win at then No. 17 Auburn last Friday. The nation’s No. 3 all-around total has been turned in three times this season – all by Thomas. It stands as Thomas’ collegiate best.
Her five appearances among the season’s top-12 totals leads the nation’s all-arounders. She turned in her second consecutive 10.0 on balance beam.
Thomas has 20 event titles in this year and 46 for collegiate career.
