Promising Florida redshirt freshman linebacker David Reese will miss the 2019 season after tearing his Achilles tendon during a recent summer workout, according to reports Thursday citing unnamed sources.

UF did not confirm the injury. Florida coach Dan Mullen possibly will address injuries at SEC Media Days in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday.

Reese, who in the spring was pushing for playing time at the rush end position vacated by Jachai Polite, played in two games as a true freshman last fall.

He was expected to begin preseason drills later this month third on the depth chart behind Louisville transfer Jon Greenard and junior Jeremiah Moon. The versatile and athletic Reese also is capable of playing outside linebacker.

Reese was a four-star prospect coming out of Vero Beach High School.

  1. Amen, Albert D Alligator, amen! While I think Jeremiah Moon could have a good to great season this year, the depth on ‘D’ could be an issue. In fact, it’s the only concern I have for this football season, injuries. And I know injuries are always a part of this game, but Florida needs to stay healthy and whole this year. Amd get well soon, David Reese, and we’ll look forward to seeing you ”ball” in 2020-’21. Go Gators!

  2. I really hate seeing injuries during season and more so during off-season. Hope Reese recovers and puts this behind him. I was looking forward to his growing role in the defense this year. Head up young man get yourself healthy and show us what you can do in 2020-21

  3. That’s a tough one, but it’s par for the pre-season course at the same time — someone almost always gets wracked up before it begins. I just wish it wasn’t him in particular. I’m not sure how big this will impact us, but we’re going to feel it somewhere along the way I’m sure. Let’s wait and see, and get him well.

  4. These are the pre-season incidents that I fear more than kids being 18-21 year old immature college boys and especially more than transfers (especially early to mid-summer transfers, which simply means a kid’s not happy with PT). You can never predict them, and it can be such a sudden impact on the team, but more importantly on the player, even more so that he was potentially going to have the potential for serious improvement and playing time this year. Almost a 2 steps forward and 5 giant leaps back for him. Hopefully he is able to have a successful surgery and positive recovery so that he doesn’t get the sense that he’s snake-bitten being at UF. Speedy and solid recovery to you David Reese…you’ve got a bright future.
