It was June of 1992 when Steve Spurrier, fresh off Florida’s first official SEC title, called The Sun columnist Mike Bianchi with a new name for the stadium that would eventually bear his name.

The Swamp.

In the years that followed, there have been some unbelievable games and players. Sun writers Pat Dooley and Robbie Andreu came up with their rankings of the 25 best moments since 1992 when Spurrier gave it that moniker.

No. 19 — Sept. 13, 2014

D-Rob and the streak

The set-up: Florida had won 27 straight against Kentucky, but Will Muschamp’s last game against the Wildcats as UF’s coach would prove to be one of the most memorable in the series. The game (between a pair of unranked teams) went to overtime after Florida’s Austin Hardin missed a 52-yard field goal to win it.

The moment: Florida faced a fourth-and-7 on the 9-yard line after Kentucky had scored in the first overtime. Demarcus Robinson had already caught 14 passes in the game, but the Wildcats put single coverage on him as an inside receiver. Robinson ran a simple stop-and-go route and got behind his defender. Jeff Driskel put a perfect pass in his hands and Florida tied the game again. Kentucky argues that the clock had expired before the ball was snapped. The SEC issued a statement that the official directly watched the clock hit zero, then looked at the ball, which was in the process of being snapped.

The result: The Gators made it 28 in a row in the third overtime when Matt Jones hammered it in from the 1-yard line after the Gator defense held for the 36-30 victory. Three losses in the next four games and ultimately Muschamp was let go after a loss to South Carolina.

The quote: “I felt good about the call. I always felt good about a match-up with Demarcus. But the main thing was to get the play off in time. They were on the other end of the field so it was hard to get anyone’s attention. But we got it off.” — Will Muschamp.

    • Jaws that was a memory I had somehow subdued into oblivion “belly bouncing.” Have to get 6 to break that one down for why that memory was suppressed. I am sure there is a medical term of some kind. But this was a thing in recent games with UK. We have beat them so many times it is a given and they were getting closer and closer until last year. I hope the coaches have said “NEVER AGAIN!” will we look past them, will we think it’s a given.
