Tracking Speights

It’s been a rocky sophomore NBA season for former Gator and current 76ers big man Marreese Speights.

The 6-foot-9 Speights  is going through the same inconsistency issues that he went through during his two-year career at Florida. For example, Speights followed up a 22-point performance against the Memphis Grizzlies with a four-point showing last Monday against the Miami Heat.

For the season, Speights is averaging 8.3 points and 4 rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench. But Philadelpha Inquirer 76ers beat writer Kate Fagan offered a less then glowing assesment of Speights in her season roundup. “No player has gone from promising to a liability faster than Speights,” Fagan wrote. “Coming out of college, Speights carried the knock that he was lazy. Last year, the coaching staff kept him in check. This season, he’s gained weight and lolled through workouts. And you can see the results  – or lack therof – during his minutes.”

Off the court, Speights is doing a good job reaching out to the Philadelphia community. Speights is serving as a celebrity bartender Thursday night on Thursday at the CopaBanana bar/restaurant in South Street in Philadelphia. Proceeds (50 percent) will benefit the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House.

The Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House provided a home-away-from-home for critically ill children and their families while they are being treated at local hospitals. Speights recently became a “friend” to the Ronald McDonald charity.

  1. Is anyone really surprised at his NBA results? I thought he sandbagged his sophmore season at UF to avoid getting injured. Such promise as a UF freshman when we WANTED to play while ususally riding the bench, and such a disappointment as a sophmore when he was basically handed the staring job with no real pressure of being benched! He obviously had the NBA first mentality. Another year could have made a huge difference with this guy. Hopefully, other young players will learn from this…but I wouldn’t count on it…
