Defense wins another one

As it has done most of the spring, Florida’s defense won another scrimmage Saturday morning on the practice field. The defense edged the offense by a score of 41-35.

Here are some of the highlights:

* The offense closed out the day with the play of the day — a beautiful 64-yard TD pass from freshman quarterback Trey Burton to senior wide receiver Carl Moore. The two also teamed up for an 8-yard TD play earlier in the scrimmage. Burton seems to be throwing with a lot more confidence (and success) than he was at the start of the spring.

* Strong safety Ahmad Black came up with an interception that was similar to the one he had in the fourth quarter of the BCS Championship Game against Oklahoma. A diving Black stole the ball right out of slot receiver Chris Rainey’s hands for the pick Saturday.

* Middle linebacker Jon Bostic put a crushing hit on tailback Mike Gillislee, preventing Gillislee from making a first down on a fourth-and-short play.

* Defensive tackle Earl Okine had one of the best days of the spring, recording a sack of John Brantley. Defensive end William Green also recorded a sack.

* Gillislee had a 50-yard run and a 1-yard TD run.

* Tailback Emmanuel Moody left the scrimmage with a quadriceps injury, but he appeared to be walking fine after practice and likely should be fine in time for Monday’s practice.

* Florida’s speed linebackers continue to excel, especially redshirt freshman Jelani Jenkins, who is looking more and more like the starting middle linebacker. Once again, Jenkins made plays all over the field Saturday and he is growing into a leader on defense.

* Wide receiver T.J. Lawrence and tight end Jordan Reed both caught 16-yard passes. Reed also came in and played some quarterback, runningUF’s Wildcat package.

* Junior wide receiver Deonte Thompson had another good day, catching several passes, including back-to-back receptions of 10 and 16 yards.

* True freshman offensive tackle Ian Silberman recovered a fumble by Reed.

* Starting place-kicker Caleb Sturgis continued to struggle with consistency. He made only about half of his field goal attempts.

  1. All of the post that I’ve been reading for the last two weeks have been preety positive as I see it. I believe this is going to be a great year for the GATORS. Many people think its going to be a down year because of all of the loses, not me I think we have just enough left to guide the new comers to another SEC championship. Thats what I think , I maybe wrong but don’t count my GATORS out for one minute. I’ll be at the SWAMP on saturday, to see for myself if I should keep that state of mind or ammend it a little.
