Ask Aschoff takes a look at some of the top players still left on Florida’s big board this week. Roughly 10 spots remain in UF’s 2010 class, so Florida’s staff has to pick its favorites at this point. On to the questions!

Does UF still have a chance at getting Christian Jones or is he going to FSU?
– ndGator

Jones began his recruitment with the Gators near the top of his list. Since then, Florida State has made a huge jump. Well, the Seminoles have always been there if you consider that Jones’ father and brother went to FSU. But Jones says that neither is pushing him toward FSU. The Seminoles always come up when he talks top schools and he mentions them a bit more than the Gators. Also look for Alabama to make up some ground. Jones was born in Huntsville and he has some family still in the state. However, I think FSU is the overwhelming favorite, but he said he won’t be making a decision until around National Signing Day.

Is it true we (Florida) are telling recruits that we are going to a more pro-style offense or is that just gossip?

I don’t think Florida coaches are necessarily telling recruits that the offense is leaning to more of a pro-style. I think that the staff wants to get the best players available, regardless of how the offense looks. Urban Meyer proved in 2006 that he could win with a quarterback (Chris Leak) that didn’t necessary fit his spread offense. Having a pro-style QB waiting in the wings in John Brantley and going after a drop-back passer like Jesse Scroggins or a bigger, downhill running back like Mack Brown doesn’t mean that Florida’s offense will start to move away from the spread once Tim Tebow is gone. The thought is that Meyer and his staff just want to get the best athletes they can on campus and then tailor their roles in the offense to meet their skills.

I know Mack Brown is supposedly our top priority at tailback in this class but could you shed some light on where we stand with Jordon James, as he just announced that one of his five official visits will be with us (Florida) for the Tennessee game. The remaining four visits will be with Notre Dame, Arizona, UCLA and another school yet to be determined.

James has come up a lot in the recent conversations I’ve had with a couple of big recruitniks. Like you said, he’s making the trip from California to Gainesville this fall for the Tennessee game, and he said he’s really excited about being on Florida’s campus this fall and wants to meet Florida’s players and really get a feel for what the program is about. He’s a scatback-type player and would do well in the spread. I think UCLA is a major player for his services. He and offensive coordinator Norm Chow keep in constant contact and Chow told him he’d like to use him like Reggie Bush was used at USC. A lot of the schools he’s interested in are out West, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him stay out there for college.

I heard Jeff Luc has us as his leader supposedly. Do you know if this is true? Also, who are the top 5 defensive players on our board?
– Lil #’s

Luc is probably one of the top guys on Florida’s entire board, and he’s one of the most athletic linebackers in the country. He would fit in perfectly with Florida’s defensive scheme and has told multiple media outlets that Florida is one of his top schools – though he insists that he’s wide open. Now, Georgia and Florida State seem to have him quite interested. Clemson is also a team to look out for. If I had to guess, I would say Florida is the favorite, but it’s still a little early to call him a lock for the orange and blue. He loved his trip to Athens and talks with FSU’s staff quite a bit. This one looks as though it will come down to the very end.

Top 5 defensive players (in no particular order):
1. Ronald Powell – Moreno Valley, Ca., Rancho Verde Defensive End
2. Jeff Luc – Port St. Lucie, Treasure Coast Linebacker
3. Richard Ash – Pahokee Defensive Tackle
4. Louis Nix (Miami) – Jacksonville, Raines Defensive Tackle
5. Lynden Trail – Miami, Booker T. Washington Defensive End

  1. Alot of Rumors about Florida taking Richard Ash off their board. Alot has been made out of him not showing up to UF’s camp in shape. Will Richard Ash attend FNL and whats your oppinion on this situation?
