Incoming 2009 UF freshman guard Kenny Boynton received more honors this week when he was named as one of five finalists for the Naismith high school basketball player of the year.

The others include forward DeMarcus Cousins (Mobile, Ala.), guard John Wall (Raleigh, N.C.), forward Renardo Sidney (Los Angeles, Calif.) and forward Derrick Favors (Atlanta, Ga.)

The Atlanta Tipoff club will select the winner in early March.

Boynton was selected to play in the McDonald’s All-American game, which will be held April 1 at the University of Miami. He’ll also compete at the Jordan Brand Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York City on April 18.

Boynton’s high school career ended Tuesday, when Plantation American Heritage lost to Pine Crest 61-59 in a Class 3A regional semifinal game. The game ended on a sour note, with Boynton missing the front-end of a one-and-one free throw attempt with 3.6 seconds left and his team down 60-59.

The miss belied what American Heritage coach Danny Herz described as a “terrific” senior season for Boynton. Boynton finished his senior year averaging 31.5 ppg.

“He worked his butt off,” Herz said. “He improved his free-throw percentage by 12 percent, he improved both his two-point percentage and his three-point percentage. His assists were up. He scored more and his number of shots were actually down compared to a season ago.”
