Xavier Gibson is nearing a decision to commit to a Division I basketball scholarship, and Florida remains in the mix.
Gibson, a 6-foot-9, 190-pound center from Dothan, Ala., confirmed that Florida was in his final three, along with North Carolina and Georgia Tech. Gibson is the 11th ranked center in the Class of 2008, according to Scout.com.
“I like Florida’s tradition,” Gibson said Friday at the AAU Under-17 Division I boys championships in Orlando. “They’ve won championships.”
Gibson said he’s been on two unofficial visits to Florida, both during last football season. He’s met with Florida coach Billy Donovan a few times.
“I really like him,” Gibson said. “He’s down to earth and I really like his style of play.”
Gibson said he intends to announce his commitment when the tournament ends Tuesday. Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton watched Gibson’s team, the Georgia Blazers, play Friday in Orlando.
Presumably, Gibson would be a potential big body in the Class of 2008 to line up next to 6-foot-9 forward Kenny Kadji. Kadji, who committed to Florida earlier this month.
