Stephen and Teresa Degraff's Melrose home has been lit up for the holidays for the past 15 years. "This is our pride and joy at Christmas time," Stephen said. "We love to do this." The house, located about three miles east of Orange Heights and U.S. 301, on the north side of State Road 26, features about 300,000 bulbs. The Degraffs turn the lights on every night through Christmas from dusk to about 10:30.

Hundreds of job seekers crowded into a state-sponsored job fair last Wednesday in New Orleans to meet with recruiters from about 70 businesses, ranging from ship builders to fast-food restaurants. They were looking for oyster shuckers, electricians, daycare teachers, welders and cashiers. Businesses fighting over a limited pool of workers were enticing them with free job training and $6,000 signing bonuses. A lack of potential employees is stopping some restaurants and retail stores from reopening and slowing the city's recovery from Hurricane Katrina.
