We just landed OSU transfer Trevon Grimes who was a 4 star receiver last year (6th ranked wr). That’s very good news. I don’t think transfers count in recruiting rankings, if he did I think he would put us back in the top 10. I think Dan Mullen is doing a great job in such a short time frame.

Alabama played FSU in week 1. They were ranked third heading into the season and are a perennial power house. You can’t fault their scheduling. It’s not their fault they caught FSU in their one down year in a decade. I don’t like Alabama. I don’t like Saban. But except for one game on the road against their biggest rival in a game that was close until the 4th quarter. They dominated the SEC West, which is the hardest division in the country. Ohio state lost two games. They got destroyed in both of them, by Oklahoma and a below average Iowa team. They got dominated all 4 quarters. I have little doubt that healthy Alabama would wipe the floor with OSU. I think the committee got it right. That being said, they should expand to 8 teams – 5 conference winner and 3 at large.

Phil Fulmer is the perfect AD for Tennessee. He’s like Tweedledum from Alice in Wonderland.

Hiring Kiffin is like selling your soul to play better blues guitar. Eventually, that bill comes due.

Even Dave Doeren turned them down. At this point, they should just remove the interim tag from Hoke. He’s better than anyone they can get.

Here is proof that the Schiano revolt had nothing to do with anything at Penn State. Gundy gave a scholarship and played as a freshman an athlete that admitted to sleeping with a 12 year old girl as a senior in high school after Texas rescinded their scholarship. This was always about them feeling they were better than Schiano.

Dan Mullen was very impressive in his first presser. He said all the right things. He looked confident and committed. He was third of three on my list of candidates after Kelly and Frost, so I am happy. The more I think about it, the more I think he is a better fit than those other two, who would have probably had an eye elsewhere. Yeah, Mullen makes me nervous, but so would every other coach. That’s what happens when you’ve been bad for the last decade. I think we need to all get 100% behind our new coach.

I only wish Alvin York was here to enjoy it this with us.

The irony is if you look at the miracle he pulled at Rutgers, a perennial bottom 10 team, he may have been exactly the right person to mold that pile of crap they have going there into something good. Now they will get someone way worse. After 4 years to rebuild Rutgers, his performance there over the next 7 years is as impressive as any coaches anywhere.

Anyone who looks at his record at the Bucs to say he can’t coach is an idiot. Spurrier was 12-20 at Washington. Lou Holtz was 3-10 at the Jets. Even Chip Kelly who every one has a woody over was 8 -23 in his last two season in the NFL.

Anyone who points to his overall record, sec record, or top-25 record at Mississippi State over the last 9 years is too young to remember what Mississippi State was before he got there. He had a better record over that time frame than the Gators. What do you think the Gators record would have been if they played in the SEC West?

Mullins would have been near the bottom of my list, but still on the list. He makes me nervous, but at least we know he can coach in the SEC.

I watched UCF vs USF and UCF vs Memphis. It was like watching the Globetrotters vs the Generals. Extremely entertaining, but not serious college football. Maybe in an 8 team playoff they would be worthy of the 8th spot.

Their real objection was that he wasn’t a big enough name. They were looking for an excuse.

I personally like Muschamp and think he’s a heck of a defensive coordinator, but I don’t think he’s a head coach. They should have whooped us and Tennessee this year and barely beat both. They are clearly way below state rival Clemson. Spurrier own Dabo when he was there. If you watch their games, still too conservative on offense and bad decision making. He’s alright at SC if their expectations are to win 7-8 games a year and make a bowl.

Even if he got the Florida job, my guess is the first chance a job he wanted on the west coast (like USC) or the NFL opened up, Kelly would be gone. We didn’t need someone like that. We needed a guy that wants to coach at Florida and appreciates our brand. I think we got that in Mullen. There are no guarantees. Mullen succeeding here is not a sure thing, but neither is any other coach. There is no guarantee Kelly will succeed at UCLA. You can only evaluate with the information you have at the moment. And what it tells me is Mullen is the right man for the job.

BTW, reading the boards at Gator Chatter is an embarrassment. Some of those folks need to go root for Tennessee.
