A severe storm early Saturday night knocked power to more than 1,400 Gainesville Regional Utilities customers, according to an outage map on GRU’s website.

The storm resulted in downed power lines and some downed trees, creating problems on a few roads, said Gainesville Police Lt. Bruce Giles.

“The winds really picked up,” Giles said. “It was mostly in the northeast and northwest. We’ve had people at intersections with signals that were out.”

The hardest hit area was east of Main Street and north of University Avenue, with about 858 customers affected at the peak of the outage. More than 600 customers in Northwest Gainesville were affected.

The storm brought strong winds and heavy rains, but passed in about a half-hour. Power remained out for some GRU customers past 8:30 p.m.
