16 … Most penalties in a game by a Florida opponent.

Here's the thing — two teams share the record for most penalties committed in a game against Florida.

And they both won the game.

Florida State committed 16 penalties in the 1998 game against the Gators in Tallahassee. The Seminoles were also playing without their starting quarterback Chris Weinke.

But the FSU defense stymied Florida, allowing only 17 rushing yards and picking off three passes. The Gators led 12-6 at the half but failed to score in the second half in a 24-12 loss. The big plays for the Seminoles — a deflected pass that went for a Peter Warrick score and an end-around pass that Warrick threw for a touchdown.

FSU ended the game with 127 penalty yards. Didn't help Florida.

Neither did it help UF against Miami in the 2001 Sugar Bowl.

The Hurricanes came into the game with a slim shot at a national title (Oklahoma instead won it the next night) and committed 16 penalties for 134 yards.

But again, interceptions trumped penalties as Florida threw three and scored only 20 points despite 452 yards of offense in the 37-20 loss.
