An 80-year-old Palatka resident died Wednesday night and a woman passenger escaped when their car drove into the St. Johns River in Palatka, according to a report.

The name of the driver has not been released pending notification of relatives.

The Florida Highway Patrol said that the white 1998 Ford Escort was headed south on Brown's Landing Road at 10:30 p.m. when it failed to stop at the dead end of the roadway that leads to a boat ramp at the river.

As the car was sinking, Anita Darlene Craig, 55, of Palatka was able to get out of the right front passengers window and swim to safety, the FHP said.

The driver tried to escape through the driver’s door window but was last seen sinking with the vehicle. The victim’s body was later recovered by the Putnam County Sheriff's Office dive team.
