A man remained in critical condition Thursday afternoon after he was struck by a car Wednesday night while riding a bicycle along Northeast Waldo Road.

About 9:45 p.m., Gainesville Police Department officers were called to the 1100 block of Waldo Road on reports of a cyclist who was falling off his bike and riding into oncoming traffic.

They arrived to find that 47-year-old Sammie Stewart had crossed into the path of an oncoming vehicle and was struck. He was taken to UF Health Shands Hospital with a severe head injury, Officer Ben Tobias said.

Stewart remained in critical condition Thursday afternoon, Tobias said.

An investigation into the crash could take months, pending results from toxicology tests, GPD said. Police reopened Waldo Road at about midnight Wednesday.
