Lauren Caldwell, artistic director of the Hippodrome Theatre, does not remember exactly when she wanted to go into acting and directing. She just knows she always had the inclination.

“I got started as a young kid hanging out at the local community theater … [I was] born with the desire and it never wavered.”

The Waco, Texas, native came to Gainesville to further her education at the University of Florida, after graduating from Baylor University with her BFA in directing. And she never left.

“I came to Gainesville in 1987 to get my master’s degree (MFA) at the University of Florida,” Caldwell says.

She admits that she planned to leave as soon as she had her degree, but when she graduated, she received two job offers: one from the University of Florida as an adjunct professor of acting and one from the Hippodrome as the director of education.
