A Gainesville man was arrested Monday after police allege he punched his pregnant girlfriend in the jaw.
Robert Lee McCoy Jr., 23, of 3190 SE 21st Ave., was arguing with his girlfriend of four years while she was driving east on Northeast Eighth Avenue at 11 a.m., according to a Gainesville Police Department arrest report. The girlfriend is four months pregnant, police reported.
An officer was watching the scene inside their car from the rear-view mirror of his vehicle. Police said the argument got heated, and McCoy punched his girlfriend so hard her head was pushed out of the driver-side window, causing her to swerve into oncoming traffic.
Their vehicle then pulled into the Gardenia Gardens apartment complex, and the officer called in the battery and asked for backup.
Three officers arrived and began questioning McCoy and his girlfriend. The report stated neither admitted to the punch and that McCoy’s girlfriend denied arguing at all.
McCoy was arrested for a felony charge of aggravated assault on a pregnant woman. He was booked into the Alachua County jail, where he remained Tuesday in lieu of a $2,000 bond.
