A 21-year-old man was arrested Thursday after sheriff's deputies say he reached his arm through a hotel window and tried to open the door before being stopped by the room's occupant and struck several times.
Tyler R. Francis was charged with attempted burglary in connection with the incident, which happened just before 10:30 p.m. at the Roadway Inn, located at 3459 Williston Road.
According to an arrest report from the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, a Georgia man was getting dressed in his hotel room when he noticed a hand reach through the window and toward the door handle. The man yelled "Stop!" and the hand retreated, only to reach again through the window minutes later and try to open the door.
The Georgia man then grabbed the arm and struck it several times with a closed fist. When he opened his door, the hotel guest saw a man, later identified as Francis, dart into a nearby room. He later told deputies he recognized Francis as a man who had been outside most of the day "drinking."
When he was arrested, Francis told deputies he stuck his hand in the window as a "joke." He was booked into the Alachua County jail, where he remained Friday in lieu of $10,000 bond.
