Authorities say a person in a wheelchair was hit and critically injured Friday morning by a vehicle on Hawthorne Road, making it the second accident this week involving a vehicle hitting a wheelchair.

Alachua County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Art Forgey said the accident happened in the 4300 block of Hawthorne Road around 11 a.m.

The person in the wheelchair was transported to UF Health Shands Hospital in very critical condition, he said.

The Florida Highway Patrol and the Department of Transportation were investigating the crash, Forgey said.
