A Hawthorne man was killed Wednesday night in Putnam County after he crashed into several trees, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Mark William Mahoney, 36, was driving his 2003 Kia north on County Road 315 near Blue Gill Drive around 9:10 p.m., a crash report said. Mahoney failed to negotiate a left curve and drove off onto the east grass shoulder, the report said.

The vehicle continued into the woods, where it hit a number of small trees. The Kia’s left side then struck a large tree before coming to rest on the west shoulder of County Road 315, the report said.

Mahoney was wearing his seat belt and shoulder harness. The report noted that the results of Mahoney’s blood-alcohol test are still pending.
