Who: Miranda Bass

School: Gainesville

Sport: Volleyball

Position: Outside hitter

Height: 5-foot-9

College chosen: Virginia State University (Petersburg, Va.)

Other schools considered: Caldwell College (N.J.) and Oglethorpe University (Atlanta)

Stats: A senior captain for the Hurricanes who missed much of the season because of injuries. She totaled 76 kills, seven blocks and 65 digs during her junior and senior season for Gainesville, which reached the regional semifinals both years. Also an outstanding weightlifter who was all-area in 2013 (first team) and 2012 (second team), but couldn't lift her senior season because of injuries.

Quotable: "I liked the atmosphere and the people (at Virginia State). Everyone was very welcoming. Coach (Rose) Burke played at GHS also, so that is kind of cool. People were really nice on campus. Overall really welcoming experience when I went on my visit. I will miss the coaches and my teammates who throughout the past year have been really supportive through all the injuries and adversity I had been going through. Feel like going to Virginia State will be like a second family for me, like it was at GHS.”
