A Chiefland driver was killed Monday night after officials say he drifted and collided into a semi-truck in Gilchrist County.

Caleb Young, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Gilchrist County paramedics, a Florida Highway Patrol report said. The collision happened about 4:23 p.m. on State Road 26 near County Road 232.

Young was driving his 2005 Chevy HHR west on State Road 26 while Johnny Hill, 54, of Gainesville, was driving east on State Road 26 in a 2009 Freightliner semi.

The FHP report said that, according to physical evidence and witness statements, after Young made a sharp turn to the left, his vehicle began to drift into the eastbound lanes. Hill saw Young’s vehicle drifting and tried to steer to the right but was unable to avoid colliding into Young, the report said.

Young’s car and Hill’s truck became interlocked and came to a rest in the middle of State Road 26. Hill sustained no injuries after the accident, the report said.

According to the report, the investigation is ongoing, pending the results of Hill and Young’s blood-alcohol tests.
