A 2014 Florida Gator sports calendar featuring Aaron Hernandez has created a stir, but the school said Tuesday it was approved before the former UF tight end was charged with killing three men.
Distributed through a third party, the calendar was approved by UF in the spring of 2013, before Hernandez’s June 26, 2013 arrest on first-degree murder charges in the slaying of Odin Lloyd, according to UF spokesman Dan Apple.
The calendar is still available through Target.com and features an action photograph of Hernandez in his Florida uniform for the month of July.
“Basically, when we became aware of the issue, we can tell them it’s no longer approved but contractually we are not in a position to have it pulled,” Apple said. “We have informed the licensee that it’s no longer approved.”
There are thousands of Gator products in the pipeline for approval at any given time, Apple added in a statement.
“It’s not common practice to re-review them once they have already been approved,” Apple said.
Since that June arrest, Hernandez has been indicted on two more counts of first-degree murder in the drive-by shooting of two other men, Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado.
Interestingly enough, Hernandez also appears in the 2014 New England Patriots calendar that can be ordered through Target’s online site. Hernandez is photographed in an action shot for the month of February.
Apple said he doesn’t anticipate any other products bearing Hernandez’s likeness at UF hitting the shelves in the future.
“We think it’s an isolated incident,” Apple said. “We don’t anticipate any other issues.”
