A Lake City police officer who was arrested on a DUI charge in November has been fired by the agency.

Staci Brownfield, 36, was off-duty and in her personal vehicle on Nov. 12, 2013, when she was involved in a single-vehicle accident at the intersection of Southeast Country Club Road and Southeast Buck Glen at approximately 9:28 p.m.

A responding Columbia County sheriff’s deputy suspected that alcohol impairment was involved and requested that the Florida Highway Patrol investigate.

After failing roadside sobriety exercises, Brownfield was arrested for driving under the influence and transported to the Columbia County Jail.

There, she provided two breath samples that registered .137 and .133, nearly twice the legal limit of .08. She was charged with DUI and released on a $1,000 bond.

An internal affairs investigation by the Lake City Police Department Office of Professional Standards found that Brownfield had violated department policy. She was fired on Monday by Chief Argatha Gilmore.

“This is an unfortunate reminder that we are not above the law,” Gilmore said. “This officer was found to have violated our department policy by driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol. While I am grateful that there were no serious injuries in this crash, we have a firm stance against impaired driving in Lake City, and our officers must set the example.”
