Crews made speedy work this week of the new CSX railroad crossing at U.S 301 south of Hawthorne.

The highway, which had been closed since Saturday morning, was expected to reopen at around 8 p.m. Wednesday, three days ahead of schedule, Florida Department of Transportation spokeswoman Gina Busscher said on Wednesday afternoon.

"We weren't anticipating having it up before Saturday at 4 or 5 p.m.," she said. "Even with the rain, we were still able to make great time."

Busscher said CSX hired Utilco Railroad Services to replace the crossing. Not only did they replace the crossing, she said, they also lowered the roadway.

FDOT contracted with Preferred Materials Inc. to repave the highway. That work was started and finished on Wednesday, she said.
