Strong thunderstorm warning issued for region

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the area, with quarter-sized hail, strong winds and lightning expected throughout Sunday night.

A slow-moving line of thunderstorms is headed southeast through the Alachua County area at around 15 mph. Heavy rain, lightning and winds of between 45-55 mph can be expected.

Shortly before 9 p.m., Gainesville Regional Utilities was reporting more than 400 customers without power in areas west of 34th Street and southwest of W University Avenue.

There were also reports of a tree hitting a house near Interstate 75 near Archer Road and scattered reports of downed power lines in the region.

Residents are urged to stay inside and report any storm damage to local law enforcement.
