In the Bible, St. Matthew is described as a tax collector. Tax collectors were disliked for their dishonesty. They overtaxed the people and pocketed the extra cash.

God allowed LaVaughn Fraser (affectionately known as Von) to serve the people of Alachua County as a tax collector. Von loved the people he served.

He went out of his way to help homeowners keep their property when their taxes were delinquent. He was very comfortable around the black commuity. You expected to see him at any event, including funerals. Sometimes, he didn't even know the deceased, but he knew a relative.

We are missing him already. He was remembered in May at the Lincoln High School Grand Reunion.

There will never be another "Von."
