ATHENS, Ga. — Florida's Olivia Janowicz defeated Santa Clara's Katie Le in the first round of the NCAA women's singles championships Wednesday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Janowicz, ranked No. 14, downed the No. 31-ranked Le, 6-0, 6-2, and advanced to the round of 32 where she will play Oklahoma State's No. 52 Viktoriya Lushkova on Thursday at 10:30 a.m.

A senior, Janowicz won the first nine games of the match and never looked back en route to the decisive opening round victory.

“I fought really hard for every point and learned from the mistakes I made during the team competition here,” Janowicz said.

Not as fortunate on Wednesday were UF senior Alexandra Cercone and sophomore Brianna Morgan, who lost their respective first-round matches.

Two Florida doubles teams were selected and begin play in the 32-team event on Thursday.
