Florida junior second baseman Casey Turgeon was chosen as the SEC Player of the Week on Monday for the first time in his career after powering the Gators to a sweep at Alabama.

Turgeon batted .727 (8-for-11) in the series to become the first recipient from UF since infielder Zack Powers received the SEC honor on Feb. 19, 2013. Turgeon was an SEC Freshman of the Week honoree on May 7, 2012.

Turgeon helped UF collect its first three-game sweep of Western Division co-leader Alabama in Tuscaloosa since 1988. The leadoff hitter helped extend the Gators’ SEC winning streak to school-record-tying 11 games, last done in 1968. He also had a .909 slugging percentage and an .800 on-base percentage.

No. 4 UF (33-15/18-6 SEC) hosts No. 24 Mercer (34-11/16-5 A-Sun) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before welcoming No. 18 Vanderbilt (36-12/14-10 SEC) to town for a three-game series starting Thursday night.
