A Starke resident was hospitalized with critical injuries and a Live Oak woman with serious injuries Friday afternoon following an accident in Bradford County, reported the Florida Highway Patrol.

Jesse Wheeler, 66, was taken to UF Health Shands Hospital in critical condition while Karen Denise Babcock, 39, was taken to Shands with serious injuries, FHP stated in a press release.

The accident happened at 2:14 p.m. on State Road 100 at Bradford County Road 18, FHP said.

Stephen Eugene Babcock, 41, of Live Oak, was driving a 2005 Ford LN8000 truck east on SR 100. Wheeler was westbound driving a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado followed by Gary Thomas Proctor, 59, of Interlachen, driving a 2006 GMC Canyon.

FHP reported that the road was wet from rain and that Babcock lost control, crossing the center line into the westbound lane.

Babcock’s truck hit the side of Wheeler’s pickup truck and then began rotating counter-clockwise into the path of Proctor.

Proctor swerved onto the shoulder to avoid Babcock, but his tail light was hit by the truck, said FHP.

Karen Babcock was a passenger in Babcock’s pickup. Stephen Babcock was taken to Shands with minor injuries.

Proctor was taken to UF Health Starke Hospital with minor injuries. Passenger Elizabeth Proctor, 51, of Interlachen, was not injured.

Charges are pending.
