Florida receiver/safety Marqui Hawkins is transferring from the school, the redshirt freshman told The Sun on Wednesday.

He did not see any action last season and was moved to defensive back during spring practice. Hawkins signed with the Gators as a receiver in 2013 and wants to play the position at his next school.

“I'm just looking for a better opportunity and somewhere I can play offense. I'd also like to be closer to home,” said Hawkins, who is from Carver High School in Columbus, Ga.

The 6-foot-1, 213-pounder was a member of the ESPN 300 but received a three-star rating from other recruiting services. Hawkins said he will be granted his release from UF this week and has no restrictions on where he can transfer.

“I had a great time at Florida and learned a lot,” he said. “Nothing against the school, I just needed a fresh start.”
