SCHOOL: St. Francis
JERSEY NUMBER: 7
WEIGHT: 190 pounds
Area baseball player I would pay to watch play: Wyatt Jackson from Suwannee. There’s more than meets the eye with him, because he’s about 5-9 but he can hit the ball a mile. I just love to watch him play and play with him. We played in a summer team together for the Florida Hardballers.
Best movie I’ve ever seen: “Field of Dreams.”
Coach and uncle Kevin Maris’ best words of advice: “Stay within yourself” and “Handle what you can control.”
Dinner on an ideal night: Yamato.
Easiest part of my school day: I really like U.S. history.
Favorite story I’ve heard about my grandfather, Roger Maris, who hit a then-record 61 home runs in a single season as a New York Yankee in 1961: I’d probably have to say the curtain call, when he hit his 61st homer and he didn’t want to go back out but all the guys on his team pushed him back out because they felt like he deserved it.
Goal for this season: As a team, I definitely want to win districts, for sure. Because we’ve never won districts in the history of our program. And then, just go as deep as we can in the playoffs.
How I help my knees recover after catching for a complete game: I do a lot of ice baths and a lot of ibuprofen.
Interesting thing about me away from the diamond: I like going hunting.
Joker on the team: Wyatt Helms. He makes some pretty funny noises.
Key to maintaining my area-leading .574 batting average? My focus is not trying to do too much. To just really stay within my game and not worry about the pitcher or the umpire or anybody else.
Least favorite St. Francis sports moment: Losing to Father Lopez in the quarterfinal my freshman year. We lost in the bottom of the 7th with two outs.
My pick to win the World Series this year: That’s a tough one, but I’ll have to go with the Yankees. I got to stay faithful to my team.
Nickname? A couple call me just B.T.
One person in my life who inspires me most: I’d really have to say my dad (Randy Maris), because he lost his dad early in his life. … So I just try and keep that up with him and just listen to him in everything baseball, because I know he knows more than me and maybe one day I’ll be like him.
Potential college major: Exercise science.
Quickest base runner in the area: Quinlan Washington from Buchholz. I played with him over the summer too, and he’s just a football player at heart when he gets going.
Rather hit an RBI or throw out a base runner trying to steal? I’d say throw a guy out, because there’s just nothing that compares to it. It’s just the adrenaline that it gives you.
Superstition I have: I’ve got to go one button down on the jersey and the same undershirt.
Twitter or Facebook? Twitter.
Universities or colleges considering: I have about seven or eight where I’m on their radar and I’ve gone on two unofficial visits and I’m going on one over spring break. Those three are High Point in North Carolina, UNF and UCF.
Vacation spot I love: I really like the Keys.
What it will take for St. Francis to win its first district title: Just really playing together as a team and picking each other up in crucial situations and having each other’s back.
Xbox, PlayStation or Wii? I can’t tell you the last time I played video games. I don’t have a single console in my house.
Year I was born: 1996.
Zoo animal I like most: Lion.
